You Are Responsible for Everything

The day that you realise that only you are responsible for everything that is happening and has happened in your life, is the day that your life will change.

Whether it is the pain, pleasure, suffering or liberation from that suffering, we have created it all.

Every experience is a manifestation of our own thoughts and actions; the conscious ones as well as the unconscious.

I read a book recently that talked about how we habitually create our own suffering as humans, and, in many ways, have actually grown to enjoy doing it. This resonated so deeply with me.

The ego loves to be a victim and to complain. This energises the ego, and if it doesn’t have something to complain about, then it will sure as hell create something covertly behind the scenes.

I quickly looked at the areas within my own life in which I have recreated many of the same scenarios that I observed throughout my childhood, which have now brought suffering to my life as an adult.

By recreating similar scenarios in my adult life, I unconsciously recreated an environment inside of my own head that was familiar to me, and this ensured a certain sense of safety for me.

Much of our adult lives, particularly for those people who, like me, observed many immature and self-destructive behaviours inside of our households in our guardians, must be spent unlearning and unbecoming.

The first step in the process of unlearning and unbecoming, is to embark on a long and arduous journey of self-inquiry.

This process starts with a very simple, and yet, very important and undervalued question:

Why?

So, my friend, l ask you:

Where in your life are you creating your own version of suffering?

And…

Why?
